Train commuters will have to dig deeper into their pockets  as fare  prices are set to increase by 50 per cent come 01 January 2024.

In a statement released by the Kenya Railways (KR) management on 01 November 2023, the fare reviews will  affect the SGR and the Nairobi Commuter Rail services.

According to the statement, the SGR first class, the prices will move up from KShs. 3000 to KShs. 4500. The economy class whose charges are currently KShs.1000, will increase to KShs.1500.

KR management has attributed the hike in fares to the increase in fuel prices in the energy and petroleum sector, subsequently increasing the cost of operation.

KR management has acknowledged the impact of these adjustments and has assured continued sustainability of its services. The company encouraged customers to plan accordingly for the revised fares that will be in effect from the beginning of next year.
