Kenya Power has issued a directive to all customers on its prepaid power plan, urging them to update their meters, commonly referred to as token meters, by August this year. This move comes as part of an ongoing global initiative to update all prepaid meters utilizing the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) in order to enhance the security of generated tokens.

According to Kenya Power, the update is crucial for ensuring the integrity and security of the prepaid power system. By aligning with the global STS standards, the power provider aims to strengthen security measures and protect against potential vulnerabilities in the token generation process.

In a statement released by Kenya Power, it was highlighted that customers will receive two unique codes via SMS from the utility company every time they purchase electricity tokens. These codes are integral to the token validation process and are aimed at enhancing security and preventing unauthorized access to electricity.

Importantly, Kenya Power assured customers that the update process will not impact any existing electricity tokens that have already been loaded into their meters. However, customers are advised to ensure that any previously purchased tokens are loaded into their meters before initiating the update process.

Customers are urged to comply with the directive and prioritize the update of their meters by the specified deadline to avoid any disruptions in accessing electricity services. Kenya Power has assured customers of its continued support throughout the update process, with dedicated channels available for assistance and guidance.
