Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha, yesterday confirmed plans to construct about 20,000 classrooms, to ensure smooth transition from primary to junior secondary school under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

The CS said the classrooms will ease congestion due to the 100 percent transition policy introduced in 2018 and the initiative shall take place between December 2021 and April 2022.

Commenting on the criteria the ministry uses in disbursing infrastructure funds, the CS said they are channeled to each learning institution and the total number of schools that benefit depends on budgetary allocations. Further, any school that needs additional funding for infrastructure, is required to apply for grants, which are awarded based on needs and quality assessment recommendations by Ministry officials.

In a bid to curb exploitation of parents by school administrations, the Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Julius Jwan, said Headteachers lack powers to prescribe specific suppliers, as the Basic Education Regulations, 2015 prohibits the same. In light of this, the government will take action against those colluding with specific suppliers to exploit parents.
