Police in Wundanyi, Taita-Taveta County, are holding a farmworker, for allegedly eloping with a 16 year old form three student. Acting on a tip-off, the officers, guided by Wumingu area chief, Paskim Kisambio, raided the suspect’s hideout on Sunday night, and escorted the man and the girl to Wundanyi police station. Mr. Kisambio reported that the man had been living with the girl as a husband and wife for the last one week. Dozens of condoms and books were recovered from the suspect.
Upon interrogation, it was shocking when the student expressed her intentions to be married, rather than go back to school. The officers affirmed plans to take the young girl for medical examination to determine her health status, before the suspect is charged with the offense to marry and defile a minor.
This comes after the Kenya National Crime Research Centre, released statistics indicating 27 reported defilement cases in Taita-Taveta county, in the past month alone, and between four and five cases every week.
Joan Akinyi, Taita-Taveta County Assembly member, requested the county and the national governments to come up with possible measures to curb the menace . Parents have also been encouraged to be close to their children, to understand their progress.
