On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, called on Kenyans to participate in the impeachment process of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Wetangula emphasized that public input is essential, as required by Article 182 of the Constitution, which mandates Parliament to facilitate citizen involvement in such significant national matters.
The special motion for Gachagua’s impeachment, presented by Kibwezi West MP Mutuse Mwengi, has stirred national interest. It outlines eleven allegations against the Deputy President, including violations of the Constitution, incitement, undermining the presidency, and illegal acquisition of property.
Wetangula announced that the motion would be available for review in all 47 counties. He urged Kenyans to express their opinions either by emailing their views to impeachment@parliament.go.ke or by visiting designated collection centers in their respective counties. Online submissions are open until October 5, 2024, at 5:00 PM, while physical submissions must be made by October 4, 2024, at 5:00 PM.
Gachagua has been granted the opportunity to defend himself on October 8, 2024, between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, either in person or through a representative. Afterward, Members of Parliament will vote on the motion, which requires a two-thirds majority of the 349 members to pass.
This move marks a significant step in the democratic process, ensuring transparency and public involvement in major political decisions affecting the country.
