Meru County has a new governor. Reverend Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia was sworn in on March 17, 2025, at Mwendantu Grounds. His swearing-in follows the impeachment of former Governor Kawira Mwangaza. The Senate and High Court upheld her removal.

Mutuma previously served as Deputy Governor. He was elected alongside Mwangaza as an independent candidate in 2022. Before politics, he worked in the Kenya Prisons Service for 19 years. He also served as a Reverend in the Methodist Church of Kenya and a Child Rights Advocate with Plan International.

The new governor holds a higher diploma in Forensic Psychology and Criminology and a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from Kenya Methodist University.

His swearing-in attracted top leaders. Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Muga and Cooperatives Principal Secretary Patrick Kiburi attended. Laikipia Deputy Governor Reuben Kamuri was also present.

In his speech, Mutuma promised unity. He vowed to restore stability in Meru and improve county development. He pledged to work with the county assembly to make progress.

Mutuma becomes Meru’s fourth governor. His predecessors include Peter Munya, Kiraitu Murungi, and Kawira Mwangaza.

Meru residents now look forward to a new leadership era. Will Mutuma deliver? Time will tell.
