In a shocking incident that unfolded in Gaturo village, Murang’a county on Saturday, November 25 2023, a 36-year-old man, Patrick Irungu, was brutally lynched by an enraged mob. This transpired after Irungu beheaded his 68-year-old mother, Magdalene Wangechi, following a heated dispute over a plate of ugali.
The horrifying altercation erupted when Irungu returned home and demanded to be served ugali, but Wangechi had prepared bananas instead. Neighbors became aware of the quarrel, and the situation took a tragic turn when Irungu, fueled by anger, grabbed a machete and killed his own mother.
Local residents revealed that Irungu was a known substance and drug abuser, alleging that he was under the influence during the fatal confrontation. Upon hearing Wangechi’s screams, a group of angry residents rushed to the scene, only to discover her lifeless body lying in a pool of blood
The furious residents eventually cornered Irungu who was trying to evade in a nearby thicket and, fueled by their own anger and grief, subjected him to a brutal lynching.
Murang’a South Deputy County Commissioner Gitonga Murungi confirmed the tragic incident, cautioning the public against taking the law into their own hands.
The bodies of both Irungu and Wangechi were transported to Murang’a County Funeral Home, while authorities continue their efforts to recover the machete used in the horrific crime. The community is left grappling with the aftermath of a senseless act of violence that unfolded within the confines of a family home.
