The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced that Cleophas Malala’s role as interim Secretary General has been revoked. In a statement released on Friday, 02 August 2024, the party revealed that following consultations, Vice Chairperson Hassan Omar, will assume the position on an interim basis. The UDA National Executive Committee (NEC) stated that these changes are effective immediately.
The NEC, led by party Chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, decided to appoint Hassan Omar, in accordance with Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution. The party also mentioned that further administrative changes will be implemented to advance its agenda and promote a more inclusive and consultative organization.
Malala, who had been serving as acting Secretary General since February 2023, after Veronica Maina’s nomination to the Senate, was replaced following a series of incidents. On Wednesday, 31 July 2024, the party had scheduled an emergency NEC meeting for Friday, 01 August 2024, prompted by a disruption at the party offices by Malala’s supporters. This disruption occurred shortly after a faction of founding members declared Malala’s ouster, and named Joe Khalende, as the new Secretary General.
In a press briefing, Mbarire condemned the chaos and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the rule of law. She criticized Khalende’s actions and emphasized that the party operates according to its constitution.
