As Kenya continues to tackle its housing deficit, the government through the State Department for Housing and Urban Development is rolling out the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP). This initiative aims to provide decent and accessible homes to Kenyans of all income levels, with a focus on low- and middle-income earners.

The Affordable Housing Programme is part of the government’s Big Four Agenda, aimed at delivering over 500,000 housing units across Kenya. The houses are categorized into; Social Housing (for very low-income earners), Affordable Housing (for low- to middle-income earners) And Mortgage Housing (for middle- to high-income earners). Locations include Nairobi (like Pangani, Shauri Moyo, and Starehe), Machakos, Nakuru, Kisumu, Mombasa, and other counties.

For you to qualify for a unit you must, be a Kenyan citizen, be 18 years or older, have a valid National ID, have a source of income (formal or informal) and be registered with the Boma Yangu portal.

To register for the affordable housing the boma yangu website at www.bomayangu.go.ke. This is the official portal for the Affordable Housing Programme.

On the website, click on “Register” and fill in your full name (as per your ID), National ID number, phone number, email address and then create a secure password. Once done, you’ll receive an OTP (One-Time Password) on your phone to confirm registration.

The next step is to complete your profile by logging in and adding your employment details (employed, self-employed, or informal sector), monthly income, preferred house type (e.g., 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, 3-bedroom) and the preferred location/county.

After successful registration, you must make regular monthly contributions to the Housing Fund. This acts as both a savings plan and a pre-qualification step.

You can contribute through M-Pesa PayBill:

Pay Bill Number: 005500 Account: Your National ID Number

And if you are employed you can contribute through a salary check off. If you’re formally employed, your employer can deduct and remit contributions on your behalf. The minimum contribution is KSh 200 per month, but higher contributions improve your chances of early allocation.

Keep checking the Boma Yangu portal or follow official government updates for announcements of project openings, balloting, and house allocations.

When a housing project near you is launched, registered members are invited to express interest and may be selected through a digital ballot system.

To avoid being scammed, only register through official channels. Avoid agents or brokers claiming to “guarantee allocation.” Keep all M-Pesa and contribution records. These are important for verifying your eligibility and finally, use your ID number consistently. All transactions and housing applications are tied to your National ID.

The government’s Affordable Housing Programme offers a real opportunity for many Kenyans to become homeowners but only if you register, contribute consistently, and stay informed.
