FREE MORARA : KENYANS PROTESTS THE ARREST OF AN ACTIVIST

Kenyans have come out in large numbers to protest against the arrest of activist and lawyer David Morara Kebaso.

Morara is a self proclaimed leader of the Inclusive National Justice Economic and Transformation (INJECT) party of Kenya. A social media sensational prominent for exposing government spending and allocations on non-existent mega projects.

Kebaso was arrested at his office in Kahawa Sukari by DCI officers where he was bundled in a Green Subaru Forester with registration plate no. KCQ 166J. The arresting officers confiscated his phones and laptops before driving him away to Nairobi Regional Police Headquarters.

Upon hearing of His arrests advocates and activists rushed at the Nairobi Regional Police headquarters to see him but they were denied access. Present among the advocates and activists rallying for Moraras release were Okiya Wamtata and Haki Africa’s Executive director Yusuf Aboubakar. Their request was denied and they were met by teargas.

Before Morara’s arrest, he had condemned the brutality meted on a Mombasa based blogger who was abducted, assaulted and sodomized for criticizing the Governor of Mombasa county. According to Morara’s post on X, the blogger was assaulted by a senior county of official of Mombasa. He went ahead to mention in his post that the governor of Mombasa Abdulswamad Nassir should be investigated and arrested over the brutality met on the blogger.

It is not yet known if this post is the reason of his arrest or if there are other charges against him. Morara’s advocate Pareno Solonka, told the media that his client is held  incommunicado.

Mr. Yusuf Abboubakr has raised issues of serious accountability about the rule of law. Activist Hussein Khalid said, ” The police in Kenya today do not follow the law, they follow orders from above and this is wrong. It is Unconstitutional and illegal.

Morara’s is admired for his outspoken nature but he has also met his share of hostility. Kenyans across social media are rallying for his release with the hashtag #freemorara
