Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has sparked an online debate after announcing his plans to construct a public school and naming it “Jalang’o School.”
The MP took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to share the news, stating:
“Today we groundbreak a new school at Nairobi West Ward. The school will serve Nairobi West and Highrise as the only public secondary school in the two wards.”
While some hailed the move as a much-needed development, a section of netizens expressed their displeasure over the decision to name the school after himself, despite being funded by taxpayers. Critics questioned why a public institution, constructed using government resources, would bear the name of an individual, arguing that the move was self-promotional.
One user commented:
“Jalang’o is building a new school fully funded by taxpayers and names it ‘Jalang’o School’ 😂😂. Taxpayers’ money and he names it after himself? A bunch of hypocrisy!”
Another added:
“Why would you name a school paid for by taxpayers as Jalang’o School? This is not a personal project!”
The controversy comes amid a growing conversation about public officials naming government-funded projects after themselves, a practice many argue should be discouraged.
As the construction kicks off, it remains to be seen whether the name will stand or if public pressure will push for a change.
