A family in Mombasa is in mourning and seeking justice after Mary Trizzer Obwor, their loved one, tragically lost her life from a gunshot wound allegedly inflicted by a Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) officer.

The incident reportedly occurred at Mary’s home in Mtongwe, where a KDF officer attached to the Mtongwe Military Base allegedly opened fire following a dispute over unpaid matatu fare with a conductor.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mary was hit in the stomach by a bullet that exited through her back, causing severe damage to her intestines. She was rushed to the Coast General Hospital, where she fought for her life for 15 days before succumbing to her injuries.

Further investigations revealed that the bullet responsible for Mary’s fatal injuries belonged to the KDF.

In addition to Mary’s death, two more people reportedly lost their lives during the incident, and one person sustained serious injuries.

The family has called for accountability and justice, urging the authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to the reckless use of force.

Mary’s passing has sparked outrage in the community, with many questioning the excessive response by an officer entrusted with public safety. Civil society groups have joined the family’s call, demanding transparency and action from the relevant authorities to prevent similar incidents.

As the investigation continues, this tragedy has reignited debates about the use of force by military personnel in civilian matters and the need for proper training and restraint in such situations.
